Families in most Canadian provinces are welcome to apply to adopt from Russia.

CHOICES offers in-house facilitation for the Russia program.

Requirements

Married couples and single applicants are eligible to adopt from Russia. There is no upper age limit for adoptive applicants; however, applicants over the age of 45 years should call CHOICES to discuss their options.

All applicants must be of good health and have no history of cancer or other serious conditions.

The Children

There are approximately 200,000 children available for international adoption in Russia, with ages ranging from one to 18 years old. The majority of children are over 18 months old at the time of placement. Both boys and girls are available, however there are generally fewer girls, which results in longer wait times for families who restrict their request to a female child.

While the majority of children from Russia are Caucasian, the vastness of the country and the regions from which we adopt allow for some cultural and ethnic diversity in the children.

The children live in orphanages and are generally well cared for. However, due to living in an institution, some children have some developmental delays.

The child proposal information usually comes with a complete medical history, information on the child's overall health, and some social history as practically available. Upon travel to Russia, adoptive families usually receive additional information.

Timeframes

After completion of the homestudy, a dossier is prepared in Canada, which will constitute the official application to adopt in Russia. The combined homestudy and dossier process may take several months.

It is difficult to provide a specific time frame for the adoption process as the political situation and legislation of any country is subject to change; therefore, CHOICES cannot estimate at this time how long it may take to receive a proposal.

A minimum of two trips are required, with a few months in between. A third trip is required in most cases.
