Requirements
Prospective Adoptive parent(s) must meet the following criteria:
- At least one of a couple must be of Indian descent.
- Applicants must be healthy, without serious physical or emotional disabilities that could affect parenting. The applicants must have a reasonable income to support a child.
- Couples must have been married for 5 years with no more than 4 children already in the family. Couples cannot be less than 30 or more than 55 years of age.
- Only ONE divorce per partner is permitted.
- Single applicants (never married, widowed, divorced) must be over 21 and less than 45 years of age to apply.
- Same sex couples are ineligible to adopt.
- Applicants wishing to adopt a Special Needs child must not be over 55 years.
- The age difference between the adoptive parent and the child must be 21 years or more. The composite age of a couple should be less than 90 years to adopt an infant.
- Applicants must have completed a minimum of high school education.
- Applicants can not have a criminal record.

The Children
- Children in India must be legally free for adoption.
- Most children available for adoption live in orphanages and are between the ages of newborn to 12 years of age. They are in need of families as a result of poverty.
- Siblings/twins/triplets cannot be separated. Two unrelated children cannot be proposed to a foreign family.
- Boys and girls are available. Families cannot specify gender.

Estimated Cost
The cost to adopt from India includes CHOICES standard fees for Inter-country adoption and is dependent upon the number of return trips to India, orphanage payments, and whether a facilitator is utilized. Please call the CHOICES office for further information.
