Estimated Cost

Please contact CHOICES to discuss fees for this program.

Timeframe

The wait times for a proposal and for travel are not clear right now as this is a new program. We are waiting to receive updated information from Imagine Adoption.

Process

All prospective adoptive parents must register with a licensed adoption agency, such as CHOICES, to complete a home study and BC adoption requirements. Applicants are also required to apply to our facilitator, Imagine Adoption, to adopt from Ghana. A dossier will be prepared and sent to the country. When the file arrives in Ghana, it is reviewed by the Orphanage Director and the Department of Social Welfare where formal approval is granted to the adoptive applicants. Children are proposed approximately 8 – 12 weeks following the receipt of the dossier. It is, however, important to notice that this is an approximate timeline, and it might change.

When a child referral is accepted, the court process takes approximately 3 months. Once the court process is complete, a lawyer will make application for the visa.

One post placement report is required one month after placement. And one additional post placement report is required at the end of 24 months, as the children are traveling home to Canada based on an Interim Guardianship Order that lasts 24 months. At the end of the 24 months the adoption is finalized by a lawyer. Parents are not required to travel back to Ghana to complete the adoption.
