Process

All prospective adoptive parents must register with a licensed adoption agency, such as CHOICES, to complete a home study and other BC adoption requirements. Parents are required to register with a facilitator who will assist with the Ethiopia portion of the adoption. A dossier will be prepared and sent to the country. Children are proposed approximately 7 to 18 months after the dossier arrives in Ethiopia, depending on the age of the child requested. A court date is then scheduled in Ethiopia, approximately 2 to 4 months following acceptance of a proposal, and adoptive parents should be ready to travel within 4 to 7 months after a successful court date. They should expect to stay in Ethiopia for 7 to 10 days. It is recommended that the parents (at their own expense) have the child retested for HIV and Hepatitis B. Three post placement reports are required within 18 months of placement. It is also required that the adoptive parents submit yearly reports and photos until the child reaches 18 years of age.
